If you’d asked me a few weeks ago if I fancied going rocking – I’d probably assume that there was some sort of band involved, or maybe a walk up a mountain. A few years ago the only rocking I knew about was the type needed to get a small baby to stop crying! But nowadays rocking is a new phenomenon altogether and when the lovely people at Mardles challenged us to get involved with their Mardles Rocks we thought we’d give it a go…even though we weren’t 100% sure what we’d got ourselves into!
It turns out rocking involves craft and running around in the fresh air and if you’ve got tablet lovers in your house like I have then you’ll jump at any opportunity to try a new activity. Mardles sent us 4 packs of their Mardles rocks stickers and some detailed instructions on how to use them. The first, and main requirement is rocks. We bought a bag of cobbles from the garden centre but you could easily use some that you find in the countryside. It’s important NOT to take rocks from the beach though…that’s illegal and you could end up with a rather steep fine! Once we got started with decorating our rocks we found that the flatter they are the better so the cobbles worked pretty well.
Once you’ve got your rocks and you’ve cleaned and dried them you can get on with decorating. The Mardles stickers go on first and then it’s best to use paint to decorate around the sticker as it is longer lasting and won’t come off causing littering in the countryside. We had some paints that we had previously bought in Hobbycraft and I also used a spray craft varnish followed by a few layers of mod podge to seal the colours and protect them from the weather.
Once the rocks are decorated and dried you can download the Mardles App and bring the characters from the stickers to life. This is definitely the most fun bit! All the characters do different things and you can move them about and take photos with them! The app is completely free and there are no in app purchases. Once you have downloaded it you don’t even need any data to run the app.
We had a good think about where we would like to hide our rocks and decided that Salcey Forest in Northampton, near where we live, would be best. There are loads of great places to hide the rocks whilst still making them visible to people walking about. We went to Salcey on Easter Sunday and had a brilliant time running around the woods finding suitable places to hide the rocks. We wrote #clarkelife on the back of the rocks too so that we would hopefully see if anyone found our rocks when they post their photos on the Mardles Facebook page.
We’ve got lots of rocks and stickers left over and will definitely be doing this again very soon. We’ll also be keeping a keen eye open for other people’s rocks as we walk around the countryside now that the weather seems to be improving.
Mardles also do a range of colouring books and masks which also come to life with their app. It’s a really novel idea and great fun for all the family. Unfortunately Archie was laid up with a bad foot so couldn’t join us hiding the stones but it’s definitely something he’ll want to do next time. It’s not always easy to find activities that everyone wants to do when you have a big age gap like we do, but this got a big thumbs up from everyone!
