It’s currently 10pm on a Thursday evening and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to sit down and write a post this week. Actually, that’s not strictly true…there have certainly been a million and one opportunities to sit and write but when you’re working at home doesn’t everything else suddenly seem so much more important?!
So my employer very kindly gave me an extra day’s work a week – well I say very kindly, I guess I must have done something to warrant getting the extra day, I don’t suppose they just felt sorry for me! Anyway, the best news is that the extra day – which amounts to 7.5 hours is working from home! Flexible working is something that makes life so much easier, especially for parents – although did you know you know longer need to be a parent or carer to apply for flexible working? As long as you have worked for your employer for at least 26 weeks you can apply. Learn all about it here. I can do the hours whenever I like which is great for fitting in around childcare and all my other jobs. It looks idyllic doesn’t it!
Yesterday was my first day working from home and I planned to do 5 hours leaving me with 2.5 hours to do this evening when Mr C and Archie were out for the evening. In reality it didn’t quite work out like that! After putting some washing on, making the beds and making myself a cup of tea I went to sit at my desk, only to be met by a huge mound of colouring pens and Pokemon cards! After clearing the mess it was about 11am when I eventually started work…a break for lunch and to walk the dogs and I was left with about 1.5 hours before school pickup! Where did the flippin’ time go??!
Today has pretty much gone the same way and I managed 2 hours during the day and another hour and a half this evening. The problem is that trying to fit in work has pretty much consumed both days and somehow not only have I not finished the hours that I set out to do, I haven’t done any of the things I would normally do on my days off either! No cleaning, no tidying (other than my office) and no exercise other than quick dog walk. I’ve not met any friends for coffee or made the hair bows I wanted to for Phoebe’s dance show…I have pretty much achieved absolutely nothing!
Working from home – not easy! I have worked at home before and I don’t recall it being this difficult! Next week I am doing two half days overtime at work as well so I’m going to have to make sure I fit in the extra hours at home on my one day off otherwise I’ll be working all weekend! The purpose of this post was really to have a little rant at myself. I need to get my act together and crack on. Get off Facebook, stop watching You tube videos, reduce the trips to the kettle and get on with my job!
I did make a video though (that was more procrastination!).
Thanks for reading – and watching! Until next time…
