I enjoy Christmas shopping but not as much as I enjoy making my own gifts for my friends and family. I first started making gifts the year my daughter was born. In my infinite wisdom I thought it would be a good idea to save money while on maternity leave, so with a 4 week old baby set about making biscuits and chutney, sewing lavender filled pillows and making spiced peaches and fudge. Oh how I remember it well! At midnight on Christmas Eve I was still putting the finishing touches to my gifts but the satisfaction I felt when everyone opened their homemade presents made it all worth while! Since then I have generally been a little less ambitious but I always try to make one or two gifts and they nearly always involve a jar!
In the Summer I trialed making a peppermint sugar scrub and it turned out so well and smelled amazing so I thought I would attempt some more scents and flavours. A homemade sugar scrub is a fantastically natural way to soften, exfoliate and freshen the skin. Sugar exfoliates without leaving any residue that can clog the pores which makes it perfect for your beauty regime. This Gingerbread Sugar Scrub recipe is a perfect warming scrub for a Winter’s day.
1 Cup Brown Sugar (Demerera is best)
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
3/4 Cup Coconut Oil (you could also use almond oil)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp mixed spice
Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. If using coconut oil you will need to heat it slightly before mixing, alternatively use your hands to mix and the heat should melt the oil. Ensure everything is thoroughly mixed. Spoon mixture into a jar for storage. I like a clip top jar but a screw top jar is just as good. Use a festive ribbon to decorate your jar and stick a label onto the front. These free printable labels are perfect and can be printed onto sticky label sheets for ease. The end result looks awesome and is a great gift for someone who loves a bit of pampering!
